Did You Know That Kennebunkport Ranked 9th in The U.S. For Summer Vacations?

Kennebunkport Harbor
The Kennebunks made number 9!

 10. Huntington Beach, California
9. Kennebunkport, Maine
The old-time fishing village of Kennebunkport is like a Currier and Ives print come to life (it's also the summer retreat of choice for George H.W. Bush). You can work on a lobster boat, fly-fish, or kayak past whimsical formations like Blowing Cave and Spouting Rock. Stroll by elaborate Federal and Victorian manses built by sea captains, many now housing inns, or experience history in motion at the Seashore Trolley Museum. Kennebunkport's riverside Dock Square teems with shops and galleries selling stoneware and watercolor seascapes, eco-chic boutiques stocking organic body gels, and of course purveyors of local blueberry jams. Old Orchard Beach features New England's only oceanfront amusement park where you can get your thrills on the Ferris wheel and roller coasters.  Tip: Enjoy live jazz several nights weekly at 95 Ocean, which also offers a great prix fixe pre-theater dinner.

You may actually stay in one of the old sea captain's mansions; the Captain Lord Mansion was built in 1812. It is a luxurious Kennebunport bed and breakfast inn which is open year round. Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

8. Traverse City, Michigan
7. Cape May, New Jersey
6. Boca Grande, Florida
5. Cannon Beach, Oregon
4. Pismo Beach, California
3. Provincetown, Massachusetts
2. Rockport, Texas

Where Can You Find Botanical Gardens Along Coastal Maine?

Botanical gardens At Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, you’ll discover stunning ornamental gardens and exceptional natural beauty, waterfalls, and incomparable stonework and sculpture.  Miles of trails allow you to experience waterfront and woodlands that are quintessentially Maine. You’ll find events and programs for many interests, year-round; and the seasonal Kitchen Garden Café and Gift Shop offer delightful – and delicious – selections.

Bev and I have not visited these gardens yet; we have been too busy maintaining the gardens at the Captain Lord Mansion and the Captain's Garden House!  However, we do plan to make a visit to these gardens this summer; they sound wonderful.

When you are visiting the Mansion this summer, please stop by the office for tickets to these gardens.  In addition to tickets, we can give you good driving directions.

4 Enjoyable Memorial Day Adventures in Kennebunkport

Flag-l-sm 2nd picture Memorial Day Weekend is the traditional start to the tourist season and there are several activities that begin this weekend which offer you different experiences to enhance your enjoyment of Kennebunkport.

Rugosa Lobster Boat The Lobster Boat Rugosa begins giving scenic cruises along the beautiful and rugged coast.  See lobster harvesting up close and personal!  This weekend, the Captain Lord Mansion begins offering a special package whereby you may take this interesting cruise and then enjoy a "Lobster Shore Dinner" at Mabel's Lobster Claw restaurant.

Trolley Ride the Rails at The Seashore Trolley Museum.  Just minutes from Dock Square, Kennebunkport's shopping district, the museum is a world apart, a place where history comes alive.  Enjoy the sights and sounds of a bygone era as you ride restored historic electric railway vehicles and explore the world-famous international transportation collection and beautiful grounds.

Schooner Eleanor 003 Step aboard the Schooner Eleanor at the docks of the Arundel Wharf. Your trip begins with a short ride down the historic Kennebunk River, passing lobster boats and luxury yachts. Once clear of the harbor, the sails are set and the wind takes charge. A typical course will take you along the scenic coastline from Cape Arundel to Cape Porpoise. Watch lobstermen at work and seabirds glide by. Learn a little local history. Help work the sails or sit back, relax and enjoy the fresh salt air. The peace and quiet of cruising under sail will put a smile on your face.

Kennebunkport celebrates Memorial Day on Monday, May 31st with an old-fashioned parade of military veterans and the high school marching band.  You might see George H. W. Bush (#41) giving an address at the ceremonies.  Finish your weekend by viewing this solemn celebration of the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

We always look forward to Memorial Day as an unofficial start to the tourist season.  Even though the real rush begins about mid-June, we want our gardens and rooms to be in tip-top shape.  During April and May our housekeeping satff is completing a thorough "spring cleaning" of each guest room. Bev is planting the gardens; this process takes about two weks of hard labor.  Our maintenance man David Hutchins and I will help her complete the task by Memorial Day weekend.

What Are the Top 5 Myths About Staying at a Bed and Breakfast Inn?

Bev & Rick Top 5 myths about staying at a bed and breakfast inn

Apr 12, 2010  (Source:

When travelers were asked by the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns if they had ever stayed at a bed and breakfast, some of their answers led to the discovery of interesting myths surrounding B&Bs.

B&B decor is limited to lace doilies, paisley wallpaper, antiques, and patchwork quilts!
The decor of some inns recall earlier eras, but increasingly, more inns are trending toward clean, sophisticated decor with modern furnishings and amenities.  Even many Victorians feature individually decorated rooms to appeal to a variety of tastes.

Bev and I believe you will find the decor at the Captain Lord Mansion and our Captain's Garden House to be uncluttered with lots of modern amenities, with special attention to comfortable beds, chairs and couches.  Bev hates lace doilies!

You have to share a bathroom with other guests!
The majority of inns offer private bathrooms.  For those that don't, most have policies of only renting rooms with shared bathrooms to families and couples traveling together to ensure the safety and comfort of guests.

Each bath the Captain Lord Mansion is totally private and has been modernized with heated marble floors, tiled showers, large vanities and many baths have jet tubs and jetted showers.

You have to eat breakfast with total strangers and eat whatever the innkeeper prepares that morning!
Many inns offers guests a variety of choices for breakfast and pride themselves on accommodating guests with special diets or food allergies. Some offer brunch featuring lots of items.

Yes, the Captain Lord Mansion serves a "family-style" breakfast where you dine with "strangers"; however, the majority of our guests enjoy meeting and sharing with new-found friends.  Also, we cheerfully accommodate special diets and food allergies.

You have to abide by a curfew set by the innkeeper!    Curfews are one of the most common myths. Guests usually are given keys to the main house and guest room doors, providing them with the flexibility to come and go as they please.

God forbid a curfew at the Captain Lord Mansion!  We give you a key to your room and a combination to our guest entry so you may come and go at your leisure.

B&Bs are only for couples and strictly prohibit children and pets!
Many inns offer family units with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and a number of inns offer pet-friendly rooms as well. These pet-friendly inns are also a good resource for pet-friendly restaurants and activities.

Although the Captain Lord Mansion is geared to adults, we have flexibility to serve children in a few of our guest rooms.

Bev and I thought you would enjoy seeing this information.  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

Winter Has Arrived in Kennebunkport! Jingle Those Bells!

DecSleigh  Dashing through the snow
In a one (2)horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh yeah

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
