The Captain Lord Mansion Bed & Breakfast Inn Asks: "What is the Kennebunkport Festival? And When Is It Scheduled?"

Kport Festival logo The Kennebunkport Festival began six years ago as a modest event called "Arts in the Inns".  It was held the first weekend in June and featured local artists personally showing their work in the various area bed and breakfast inns.  The last several years the event grew into the Kennebunkport Fine Living Festival with an additional emphasis on fine food and wine being paired with the art.  The food and wine events became paramount with tented, open air venues of wine/food tastings, art shows and also there were extraordinary culinary dinners by renowed local chefs and these dinners were hosted at private homes.  Also, there were very special dinners held at the world famous White Barn Inn.  This year the Festival will again be the first weekend in June and the events have been expanded to appeal to even more visitors to Kennebunkport.  We at the Captain Lord Mansion can assist you in planning which events might be of interest to you.  Also, as part of our memebrship in the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport, we are sponsoring the "Brews and Tunes" event to be held at the Pilot House Boat Yard, from 3pm to 6pm, Saturday, June 4th.  We'll have discount tickets to that event for our guests.  Check out the Festival Website for a detailed calender of events and make your plans now to be in Kennebunkport that weekend!  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

Christmas Prelude is coming to Kennebunkport Again! When?

Carolers in Snow
Wow!  It is getting to be that time of year again.  Time changed from Daylight Savings Time; it is getting dark about 4:30pm and Bev and I will very soon begin decorating for the Christmas holidays.  The first two weekends in December will herald the annual Kennebunkport Christmas Festival, called Christmas Prelude.  It hardly seems possible that this will be the 29th annual Prelude.  I was among the group that conceived, planned and executed the first one 29 years ago!

Christmasprelude3                                                  The first Christmas Prelude was a modest affair that included a tree lighting ceremony, a River Tree Arts concert, a chowder luncheon, candlelight caroling and Santa’s arrival by lobster boat. We now have three tree-lighting ceremonies – Dock Square in Kennebunkport, Lower Village of Kennebunk and the lobster trap tree in Cape Porpoise; about a dozen Art and Craft Fairs; approximately 12 venues serving either breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner; programs sponsored by the Historical Society; and 12 programs of music celebrating the season. Santa still arrives by lobster boat escorted by two very special “lobster elves”. The Kennebunkport Business Association’s Christmas Prelude is now in its 29th year. For each of these years, business people have worked with the Kennebunkport community to recreate the spirit and joy of the Christmas season. This link will take you to this year's Christmas Prelude schedule of events

Prelude TreeBev and I are grateful that the Captain Lord Mansion is fully booked this year.  We have many couples and individuals that come back to stay with us year after year.  However, there are always cancellations; so give us a call if you would like to be considered for a room for 2011; that will be the 30th Anniversary and there should be several new wrinkles added to that significant celebration.  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

What is Kennebunkport's Gathering of the Scarecrows?

Scarecrow 2009 002 The Mansion's scarecrow, "Captain Rick" says "Hello"!  This jolly fellow sits at the entrance to the Captain Lord Mansionparking lot welcoming guests to the Mansion.  He is one of a crowd of scarecrows that have mysteriously appeared in the Kennebunks during our fall harvest time.  This Saturday, October 17th, the scarecrows will gather together in Dock Square.  After a period of mingling and meeting each other, at 3:00pm they will parade along Ocean Ave to the River Green which is located in front of the Captain Lord Mansion.  After the parade, the "Gathering of the Scarecrows" party will commence at the River Green where there will be food, games and music.

Kennebunkportis celebrating the "Legend of The Scarecrows".  Have you ever wondered where the scarecrows go at the end of each growing season?  Legend says that they begin to "gather" in October at a secret location to celebrate the new harvest and to discuss the next growing season; that is before they are blown away by November's chilly winds!  We found this year's "Gathering Place" and invite you all to come help us celebrate!  Your innkeeper, Captain Rick!
