What Are The Names of The Children In The New Captain Lord Mansion Garden Sculpture?

2010 Garden Pictures 011

Thank all of you who submitted suggestions of names for the children depicted in our new garden sculpture.  We had 99 entries with many folks offering unusual and different names, as well as interesting reasons for each suggestion.  Names people suggested included names of their children, their grandchildren, names of Captain Lord’s family members and other thoughtful ideas such as commemorating famous citizens of K'port.  Of course we had several suggestions of Kenny, Bunky and Portia!  Just a little too cute!

Originally, we had hoped to choose the names for the 4th of July weekend.   Bev and I apologize for the delay in making the decision; however, I was away in Oxford, UKfor a seminar from July 2nd until the 11th.  We just couldn’t make the decision until I returned because we were still receiving suggestion right up until the 4th.

The winning names are Caleb, Lily and Molly.  We thought that these were sort of old-fashioned names which would be appropriate for the age of the inn, 1812!  Additionally, we had a suggestion of “Snickers” for the bird.  Although naming the bird was not part of our contest, we thought that was a splendid name!  There were 2 submissions for Caleb; 6 submissions for Lily and 5 submissions for Molly.  Each winner has been sent a $100 Gift Certificate to be used at a future stay at the Mansion.

It was a fun contest and we certainly appreciate everyone who took the time to participate.

Sincerely, Rick & Bev, Your innkeepers

Come to Our Garden Party!

Table_2

This will be our second summer hosting complimentary wine and cheese "Garden Parties" by the waterfall in our beautiful garden.  Shaded by the ancient Chestnut Trees, we’ll sip wine and share our 32 years of innkeeping knowledge of the area and get to know our guests in a more relaxed setting.  Most Saturday evenings beginning at 5:00 pm stroll out to the gardens to find other couples engaged in animated conversations.  Join us for a relaxing getaway at the Captain Lord Mansion some weekend this summer and add a garden party to your escape.  If the weather doesn't permit fellowshipping in the garden, we'll gather in the Mansion's large "Gathering Room".  See you by the waterfall!  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

Spring Arrived Early In Kennebunkport!

Exterior_001_300dpi Welcome Early Spring!  The weather has been unusually warm, spring flowers are blooming early, robins are plump and plentiful around the inn's grounds and we have cleaned the gardens of the winter detritus!  We've pressure washed the lawn chairs and put them out on the lawn.  Also, the Memory Garden fountain has been cleaned and is now gurgling away matching the songs emanating from the garden waterfall.  Imagine sitting in the sun while on our delightful garden swing listening to the sounds of spring.  Bev and I look forward to welcoming you to the Captain Lord Mansion some time this spring.

What is A "Dime for Time"?

DIME_FINAL

CAPTAIN LORD MANSION TEAMS UP WITH AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY OFFERING A "DIME FOR TIME" FOR BREAST CANCER VICTIMS

Sign Up On Our Captain Lord Mansion Facebook Page Now!

Most people start the year with a pledge to improve themselves in some way.  Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis, owners of the Captain Lord Mansion in Kennebunkport, ME, are starting 2010 with a different kind of resolution.  Captain Lord Mansion will pledge a dime for each guest who stays at the Captain Lord Mansion from January 1 - October 31, 2010, as part of a campaign they are calling “A Dime for Time”. The "Dime for Time" funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer awareness and research programs. Yet, there is a twist:  If the guest has visited once before, the dime will be doubled. If the guest has visited 20 times, the dime will be multiplied by 20.  In short, the pledge will come from the number of visits they’ve had multiplied by 10-cents.  If a guest has had 30 prior visits, the donation will be 3.00 for that guest.  After 31 years of owning the Captain Lord Mansion, Litchfield and Davis know that the contribution for most guests is multiplied by at least five, and up to 80 times for some guests!  The "Dime for Time" campaign was kicked off on New Year’s Eve with a pledge of $550 from Litchfield and Davis, representing approximately a dime for every guestroom booked in 2009.  Guests will be encouraged to contribute to the fund throughout the year too.

The campaign was created in honor of Bev Davis’s sister, who died of breast cancer.  During this past October "Breast Cancer Awareness" month, the notion of helping others with breast cancer spurred the idea to create this new campaign.   Bev and I think one of the most meaningful wishes a breast cancer survivor has is for time; time to spend with their families and time to enjoy the rest of their lives.  This campaign will allow Captain Lord Mansion and its guests to contribute throughout 2010, allowing each person to make a difference, or to honor someone they know who has been touched by breast cancer.  The "Dime for Time" program will be culminated the weekend before Thanksgiving (November 19-20, 2010) when breast cancer survivors will be offered a complimentary two-night stay at the Captain Lord Mansion.

Those wishing to be considered must be breast cancer survivors and are asked to describe their stories and why they should win a free weekend on the Captain Lord Mansion’s Facebook page, plus send their story via email to innkeeper@captainlord.com before September 1, 2010.   Facebook entries are limited to 100 words or less, but emailed entries may be longer.  All emailed entries must include the name, address, phone number and email address of the sender for consideration.  Entries must be offered both on Facebook and via email for consideration.  The Captain Lord Mansion will ask Facebook fans to help select those to attend the complimentary weekend. All entries on Facebook can be anonymous.

Each breast cancer survivor who is selected for this weekend at the inn will receive a complimentary two-night stay, chair massage and attendance at a reception where Bev and Rick, owners and innkeepers of the Captain Lord Mansion, will present the check for funds raised through the "Dime for Time" program to the American Cancer Society.

We are excited about the prospects both for raising money for research and for honoring cancer survivors.

Your Innkeepers, Bev Davis and Rick Litchfield

When Does Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude Begin?

S.L. Timson Christmas 2006 003
Carriage Rides at Christmas Prelude

History of Christmas Prelude, The 28th Celebration Of Which Begins This Weekend, December 4th, 2009

It was the early spring of 1982 when local giftshop owner Henry Pasco called a meeting of other business people for the purpose of discussing ways for the business community to give thanks to the residents of Kennebunkport and Kennebunk for supporting them. Henry suggested a Christmas Festival of some sort to create a sense of community spirit. At the time Nantucket and Marblehead were staging Christmas Festivals. The goal was not to duplicate these events but to stage our own unique festival. Committees were formed and the name Prelude was suggested.

The first Prelude included a tree lighting ceremony, a River Tree Arts concert, a chowder luncheon, candlelight caroling and an event unique to Kennebunkport, Santa’s arrival by lobster boat. We now have three tree-lighting ceremonies – Dock Square in Kennebunkport, Lower Village of Kennebunk and the lobster trap tree in Cape Porpoise; about a dozen Art and Craft Fairs; approximately 12 venues serving either breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner; programs sponsored by the Historical Society; and 12 programs of music celebrating the season. Santa still arrives by lobster boat escorted by two very special “lobster elves”. The Kennebunkport Business Association’s Christmas Prelude is now in its 28th year. For each of these years, business people have worked with the community to recreate the spirit and joy of the Christmas season.

Behind the scenes of Prelude is a cast of hundreds. Year after year, virtually every aspect of our community gets involved. Participating in Prelude activities are the churches, schools, civic and community groups, which make Prelude the centerpiece of their fund-raising activities. Many groups support their charity work from the fairs and feasts held on the two weekends. One of the biggest events is held by the Washington Hose Company that serves breakfast and dinner to hundreds of people. The firefighters turn the money they generate from these events into rescue equipment, which otherwise would have been purchased with tax dollars. The very purchase of their rescue boat, the outfitting of it and the upgrading to technical equipment is a direct result of monies raised over Prelude.

Prelude would not be the celebration that it is without the thousands of volunteer hours that go into the preparations. The KBA plans and pays for the decorations for Kennebunkport and Lower Village. In good weather or bad, you will find these hardworking volunteers devoting two days of their time in dressing the villages in their holiday finery with sparkling lighted Christmas trees, seashell decorated wreaths, and garlands of greenery and ribbon.

What is Kennebunkport's Gathering of the Scarecrows?

Scarecrow 2009 002 The Mansion's scarecrow, "Captain Rick" says "Hello"!  This jolly fellow sits at the entrance to the Captain Lord Mansionparking lot welcoming guests to the Mansion.  He is one of a crowd of scarecrows that have mysteriously appeared in the Kennebunks during our fall harvest time.  This Saturday, October 17th, the scarecrows will gather together in Dock Square.  After a period of mingling and meeting each other, at 3:00pm they will parade along Ocean Ave to the River Green which is located in front of the Captain Lord Mansion.  After the parade, the "Gathering of the Scarecrows" party will commence at the River Green where there will be food, games and music.

Kennebunkportis celebrating the "Legend of The Scarecrows".  Have you ever wondered where the scarecrows go at the end of each growing season?  Legend says that they begin to "gather" in October at a secret location to celebrate the new harvest and to discuss the next growing season; that is before they are blown away by November's chilly winds!  We found this year's "Gathering Place" and invite you all to come help us celebrate!  Your innkeeper, Captain Rick!

What Are These Objects Which Are Found at The Captain Lord Mansion?

Col-horsechestnut These trees are commonly planted as ornamental shade trees, but the nuts are sometimes confused with the fruit of another tree. Confusion arises because of the common name of the fruit. However, this plant is not the same as the edible nut.

There are two of these magnificent trees located on the side lawn of the Captain Lord Mansion.  The trees are over 150 years old, but they continue to attract the attention of guests!  Each fall many of our guests wander out onto the lawn to collect these beautiful nuts which look like small pieces of polished mahogany!  The challenge for those who collect the nuts while here at the inn, is that once the nut dries, they shrivel up and look disgusting!

Horsechestnut_seed

Of course, guests unfamiliar with these trees want to know what kind of nuts these are and if they are edible.  There are a couple of names by which these nuts are commonly known.  Drop us a note on our Face-book Page if you think you know the answer to this question!

Bev and I have a strenuous time each fall as we rake up the mess these trees leave on the lawn!  However, acorns are worse!  Your Innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

Where Can You Find The Captain Lord Mansion in Miniature?

CL_Mansion_collage Hestia Creations of Marblehead, MA has been making miniature copies of the Captain Lord Mansion for many years.  The miniatures come as both Christmas ornaments and magnets.  The Christmas ornaments look very beautiful with the oval foliage surrounding the depiction of the inn building.  Over the many years selling these lovely keepsakes, we've offered several limited editions which have completely sold out.  Additionally, in the past, we offered Christmas Prelude Ornaments depicting Dock Square.  Those too have sold out.  However, we currently have a good selection of the Christmas collectible ornament pictured here.  If you would like to order one, they are $24.95 plus $4.95 for shipping.  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield
