October Food Festivals are Near Kennebunkport, Maine!

Foodies_pagepic October is Maine Lobster Month: Maine lobster (is any other kind half as good?) is the starring item on menus at sophisticated restaurants throughout the state, as well as at rough-hewn shanties with picnic tables set along the coast. To many people, it just isn’t summer without a trip to a lobster shack and a casual meal outside overlooking the sea. To sample a local favorite, ask for the lobster “shore dinner,” which usually includes at least red potatoes and corn-on-the-cob, boiled in the same salty water as your lobster and embellished with even more melted butter. Visitors and Mainers alike can visit the Maine Lobster Promotion Council for information about the local lobster industry, lobster history, recipes, purchasing a certified Maine lobster or to report a lobster “sighting.”

Harvest on the Harbor Food Harvest On The Harbor:The Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud to present the third annual Harvest on the Harbor, Maine's premier food and wine experience, a three-day gourmet getaway where you can experience the flavors of Maine, all on the magnificent coast during the beautiful harvest season. Don't miss the Grand Tasting on the Harbor, The Ultimate Seafood Splash, Perfect Pairing: Presenting Maine's Own James Beard Award Winners, Maine Lobster Chef of the Year Competition and the new and expanded Savory Samplings at The Marketplace! Please visit for more details and to purchase tickets!

Maine Restaurant Week is a statewide promotional dining event from October 24th through the 31st where participating restaurants create and feature special three-course prix-fixe dinner menus -- priced at $20, $30 or $40.  The Kennebunkport area restaurants that are participating are One Dock Square and Federal Jacks.  Bev and I highly recommend both restaurants. Do You Remember Bev's Zucchini Bread Being Served at Captain Lord Mansion Breakfasts?

WP9-30-09 200  Here is another of Bev's original recipes from the days when she prepared breakfast for the guests at the Captain Lord Mansion each morning.  We used to keep a garden beside the "Carriage House"; it is now part of our parking lot/driveway.  Bev grew lots of zucchini and developed this recipe in order that we might put the voluminous quantities of those tuberous vegetables to good use!

This is the second of our fall blogs reminiscing about the past!  Enjoy!

When Is Maine Restaurant Week?

Maine Restaurant Week is Monday, March 1 through Wednesday, March 10

This is the second year for the statewide event, offering all of us an affordable and fun reason to explore new restaurants and visit old favorites during March, traditionally one of the quietest months of the year for Maine restaurants.

Participating restaurants will once again showcase their signature dishes on specially priced, prix fixe menus. For 2010, restaurants will serve three-course meals priced at 20.10, 30.10 or 40.10. Also some restaurants are serving $15.10 lunches.

A broad range of Maine's finest restaurants have committed to the second annual Maine Restaurant Week. Total participation is about 35% more  than in 2009.  Another addition this year: select inns, hotels and B&Bs will be offering special lodging rates (a great excuse to visit a distant restaurant and take a mini-vacation).  The Captain Lord Mansion is offering 3 nights for the price of 2.  This package is avialable all month.

Get in on the delicious fun of Restaurant Week. Start now by taking a few minutes to discover participating restaurants and their menus, lodging partners, and special event information.

Also we invite you to join our email group. You'll receive only useful information like Restaurant Week news and special restaurant and bar offers. Your email address will never be shared.

Who Is The Maine Lobster Chef of The Year?

The audience at Portland's Harvest on The Harbor

Chef Mackenzie Arrington,

Maine Lobster Chef of the Year.

Harvest on the Harbor, presented by the Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau, brings nationally recognized chefs using Maine products and blends them with our own award winning local chefs in celebrating Maine as a culinary travel destination.

Chef Mackenzie Arrington, a recent graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, earned the title of Maine Lobster Chef of the Year on Friday with his dish of Roasted Lobster Tail on Braised Cabbage and Cornbread. Two hundred lucky attendees tasted dishes prepared by three chef competitors, watched each chef demonstrate their recipe, and then voted on their favorite. At the competition, Mackenzie was awarded $1,000 in prize money and a limited edition Maine Lobster jacket.

Are you a "Foodie"?  Why not plan to visit the Captain Lord Mansion next mid-October, stay at the inn and go to this fabulous festival?  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

When Can You Experience the Flavors of Maine at Harvest on the Harbor?

Harvest on the Harbor Tents

Whether you are a full-fledged “foodie” or an emerging gourmand, you are sure to find more than one event to whet your appetite at Harvest on the Harbor. This Portland Maine event is something for everyone – from a food and wine tasting reception, to seminars and cooking demonstrations, to a marketplace with all things food related – tastes and temptations at every turn.

Bev and I look forward to experiencing this great festival.  In only a few short years it has become a significant fall festival which draws thousands of visitors to Southern Maine.  Portland is only a short 35 minute drive from Kennebunkport and the Captain Lord Mansion.  If you are a guest with us the weekend of Oct 22-24, we can give you explicit driving directions and help with parking information.  Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield
